Scout Textiles: A piece of home on unique textiles

For Amy Hawkes, having a good creative outlet is a must. So one that combines her love for photography and quality textiles into her own small business is the perfect thing.

Scout Textiles is Amy’s unique range of iconic local imagery printed on beautiful homewares, created in her small studio in Perth (“very small!” Amy adds). Her pieces are all lovingly handmade, with all the hand-stitching, photography and stencilling done by her.

We caught up with her to find out more about her textiles and what inspires her.

Q: What led you to start your own range of textiles?

Amy: I have been sewing and stitching since I was in primary school. My mum taught me all the basics and it is something I have always loved doing. And still to this day, mum checks all the seams!

I love beautiful textiles and using the best natural fibres is a very important part of what I do.

I made the leap into starting my business after having three kids (which mixes things up a bit)! I can’t put a price on being able to spend time with the kids growing up while also doing something I love.

What inspires you?

My inspiration comes from right here in Perth and wider Western Australia, our beautiful backyard. We have some of the most incredible scenery and locations for shooting.. I always set out to capture these nostalgic places, which work so well on homewares like linen cushions.

How long have you been doing photography for?

My career was predominantly in photography and film so these are a huge part of what I do and have been for as long as I remember! I find it a brilliant creative outlet and being able to immortalise moments and places is what I love most about it.

What is your favourite destination to photograph?

It would have to be Rottnest! Aside from being a stunning and iconic Perth location, it holds so many great memories.

What is your favourite item from your range?

This one – again, Rottnest! (below)

My son is actually in this particular image taken at The Basin on a day we spent as a family there so it is pretty special to me. For me, it captures everything I love about Rottnest.

What is your pick from your range for Christmas?

I have a range of gifts to suit most people. For sending gifts overseas to friends and family, my linen tea towels with Perth prints and bread bags are perfect. I have also released a Christmas print linen tea towel.

For a larger gift, you can’t past one of the linen cushions or tote bags, all with iconic Perth prints. I also have mini totes for younger girls and teens.

What is next for Scout Textiles?

I absolutely love what I am doing and its exciting to continue to learn and develop new ideas and techniques! Watch this space…
