Four creatives from the western suburbs of Dalkeith, Claremont, Subiaco and Shenton Park are using their art to support communities in need and help create a more sustainable world. Collectively, they will exhibit for the first time ever at WA’s biggest design market – Perth Upmarket – to show how easy it is to do good while shopping
Justine Barsley – Director of Perth Upmarket – commented that the new creators are part of the First at Upmarket offering – a new incubator concept that helps newly established local artists to get into the marketplace – and will add a unique experience to the event on 21 March 2021.
“First at Upmarket has been developed to encourage and support new creative small businesses to test a ready Perth market in an effective way without the risk of high costs of a brick and mortar store or a delay in getting a brand in front of buyers,” explained Justine.
“In addition to an affordable exhibition rate, the new Perth creatives also receive online training to prepare for market day and valuable tips, advice, networks from the 200+ Upmarket community members who’ve had years of trading and business experience.”

Perth Upmarket: Each of your businesses present a sustainable or giving element which will add a unique experience to a concept of shop local, shop good to this month’s Upmarket. How have you come up with this sustainable concept?
Prints by Aliah: My work was inspired through a community aid volunteering trip to India, and now 40% of profits for each purchase goes directly towards creating meal packs for people in the Anantapur district in India. I’m excited to bring to the Perth Upmarket my passion for photography and art, whilst also giving the buyer of my artwork the opportunity to become a patron who can contribute to help end world hunger and poverty.
Miko Cosmetics: I want to show people at the upcoming Perth Upmarket, and beyond at my upcoming guest display at Mt Hawthorn Gift Collective, how it is possible to be guilt free when it comes to buying luxurious beauty products such as textured soaps inspired by Carnarvon mangoes and charcoal pebble shower melts.
Mamy Hews: In addition to stopping waste in the fabric industry, I was also so tired of beige, fawn, camel and tan interiors. So I combined my two passions of bold colour and sustainability to create vibrant one off improvised patchwork homewares, handmade from 100% locally sourced and recycled fabrics.
Julia Grace Designs: I have previously designed environmentally sustainable garments for art – such as at the Mandurah Wearable Art program, Telstra Perth Fashion Festival and Eco Fashion Week. Now, I am excited, through Perth Upmarket, to show people an alternative to fast fashion with everyday garments that have been made with minimum impact on the environment.
