Spotlight on Rachelle Dusting: A Realistic Vision in Art

In the picturesque setting of Goolugatup Heathcote, an area steeped in sacred Indigenous significance and bordered by the breathtaking river views of Applecross in Perth, you'll find an art space emanating creativity and inspiration. This is the world of Rachelle Dusting, an oil painter who has married passion with profession, and today, we delve deep into her story.

How It All Began

Rachelle's love for crafting and design was evident early on, from creating greeting cards to fashioning beaded jewellery. But it was at the age of 15, after being mesmerized by her art teachers' astounding realistic portraits, that she truly fell in love with drawing. This pivotal moment marked the confluence of her interests, evolving them into a deeper form of "art making".

Today, Rachelle's creative sanctuary is the art space in Goolugatup Heathcote, a place intertwined with her childhood memories. Located on sacred Indigenous grounds and overlooking one of Perth's iconic river spots in Applecross, it serves as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for her.
The Making Process

Rachelle is a prodigious oil painter who specialises in realism—a style that often elicits reactions like "hey, that looks like a photo!". Storytelling lies at the heart of her paintings, making humans her preferred subjects. Her technique involves methodical application of thin paint layers, often drawing inspiration from her own curated photographs.

Moreover, Rachelle is deeply committed to fostering the emerging artist community. She channels this dedication into teaching her art style to others, holding regular art classes on Saturdays for budding adult artists.

Journey to Full-Time Artistry

Rachelle took her initial steps into the art world by registering for an ABN in 2012. By 2015, her path transitioned seamlessly to that of a full-time artist. Initially, she juggled between seasonal tutoring at a Perth university and her art practice. But as time passed, she had amassed enough art projects to sustain her practice without being dependent on an employer.

Her journey wasn’t without challenges. As an entrepreneur, she learned the importance of staying true to her vision. In the beginning, she undertook diverse projects for experience, exposure, and to sustain her business. With time, however, she became selective, choosing projects that aligned with her artistic aspirations.

Aspirations and Goals

Rachelle dreams big. She hopes to one day showcase her work in the Archibald, establish her own gallery, and even start a formal art school in WA. We're excited to watch her dreams unfold!

Markets and Personal Connections

For Rachelle, Art Fairs and Markets break barriers. They render art accessible and enable direct interactions between artists and admirers, offering a more personal touch compared to traditional galleries.
