Kerry Munns Artlife: Turning Dreams into Sustainable Wearable Art

Kerry Munns, the force behind "Kerry Munns Artlife," is a Perth based artist who has turned her love of art into a thriving business.

In this feature, we spotlight Kerry Munns and her journey of creating sustainable, wearable art that not only showcases her artistic talent but also contributes to a more eco-friendly fashion industry.

Having been a self-taught full-time artist for several years, Kerry harboured a deep desire to see her art on fabric and clothing. It was this vision that fuelled her determination to explore the realm of surface design. A couple of years ago, she embarked on a journey to learn how to transform her colourful paintings into repeat patterns, ready to be printed on various surfaces.

Kerry's creative process showcases her art and passion for sustainability. Her journey starts with the creation of a painting, often using watercolours, acrylics, or digital media. These paintings are then scanned into Photoshop. Kerry either extracts specific elements from her artwork or uses the entire piece to develop entrancing repeat patterns.

Once the patterns are perfected, they are brought to life on sustainable 100% cotton or linen fabrics. These fabrics serve as the canvas for Kerry's wearable art. The final step involves collaborating with skilled seamstresses and tailors based in India, who transform the fabrics into beautifully designed garments. Throughout this process, Kerry is deeply involved, ensuring that every piece lives up to her artistic vision and commitment to sustainability.

Kerry Munns' dedication to her craft is a full-time endeavour. This commitment allows her to pour her heart and soul into each creation, ensuring that her wearable art stands out in both quality and design.

For every entrepreneur, especially those in the creative sphere, challenges are part and parcel of the journey. For Kerry, one of the significant challenges was taking the leap of faith and placing her first large orders without any certainty of whether they would sell. However, the quality, craftsmanship, and artistry invested in her garments paid off as they resonated with her customers, making them feel extraordinary when wearing her creations.

Kerry's vision for the future is as vibrant as her wearable art.

She aspires to continue painting and designing new collections for upcoming seasons. Expanding her collection to include wearable art for men and children is on her agenda, promising more inclusivity and creativity in her offerings. Building a strong customer base in Western Australia and beyond, through markets and events is also a part of her vision for the future.

As a newcomer to the Perth Upmarket, Kerry is excited to join this vibrant community of artists and creators.

The market provides her with a platform to showcase her sustainable wearable art to a wider audience, and she looks forward to connecting with her customers in person on Sunday 26 November at UWA, from 10am – 4pm.
