Soaring to New Heights: The Art of Aviation with Steve Verrall

Capturing the Beauty and Majesty of Flight Through the Lens of a Passionate Pilot-Turned-Photographer

For Steve Verrall, the sky has always been more than just a view; it’s been a lifelong passion. From the cockpit of an airline to the lens of a camera, Steve’s journey has taken him to new altitudes—both literally and creatively.

At AVATAIRE Aviation Art, he masterfully captures the majesty of flight through stunning photography and transforms these moments into breathtaking aviation wall art. As Steve prepares to showcase his work at the Perth Upmarket on September 15, 2024, we take a closer look at the man behind the lens and the story that fuels his creative flight.

The Genesis of AVATAIRE Aviation Art

Steve’s deep passion for aviation began long before his first flight as an airline pilot. With a camera in hand and the dream of soaring through the skies, his two passions initially ran on parallel tracks. However, it wasn’t until after leaving his flying career behind that Steve discovered a way to merge his love for photography with his deep-rooted admiration for aircraft.

From airshows to aviation museums, Steve has spent the last seven years capturing the beauty and power of aircraft across the globe. Each photograph in his collection tells a story of dedication, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Crafting Each Masterpiece

At AVATAIRE Aviation Art, every piece of art begins with a photograph—one that Steve has meticulously captured himself. He steers clear of AI-generated images and relies solely on his own experiences behind the camera.

The process is as meticulous as it is creative: after capturing the perfect shot, Steve retreats to his Perth-based studio to develop the image in what he refers to as his 'digital darkroom.' Here, he spends anywhere from a day to a week ensuring that each image speaks for itself, often creating multiple proofs before achieving the perfect tonality, colour, and presence. The final print is then produced using premium-quality papers or canvases, carefully varnished, and stretched over sustainably-sourced frames, resulting in a true work of art.

Achieving Lift-Off: A Memorable Success

One of Steve’s most defining moments came after years of honing his craft. Venturing into art markets around Brisbane, he was met with overwhelming praise from customers who shared his passion for aviation. These interactions not only validated his hard work but also revealed a broader community of aviation enthusiasts, each with their own stories and connections to flight. This realisation reinforced Steve’s belief that his art resonated with many, propelling AVATAIRE Aviation Art into the spotlight.

Balancing Life and Art

Transitioning from a career as an airline pilot to a full-time artist was no small feat, but Steve embraced the challenge with determination and focus. While his top priority remains his young son and wife, he continues to pour as much time and energy as possible into creating new art. Like many small business owners, Steve finds that time is his greatest challenge, but his passion for aviation art keeps him motivated.

Looking to the Horizon: Future Goals

As AVATAIRE Aviation Art continues to grow, Steve’s vision for the future remains clear: to explore new creative styles and techniques that allow his art to even more powerfully convey the beauty of flight. With each new project, he aims to push the boundaries of his craft, capturing the essence of aviation in ways that inspire and captivate.

Perth Upmarket is the next step on this journey, and Steve is looking forward to connecting with fellow aviation enthusiasts and sharing his art with a wider audience.

Steve Verrall’s journey from pilot to artist is a testament to the power of following one’s passions. Through AVATAIRE Aviation Art, he brings the awe-inspiring world of aviation to life, creating pieces that resonate with both aviation lovers and art enthusiasts alike.
