Discover Liyan: A Fusion of Culture, Design, and Sustainability
Founded by Simone and Corey Atkinson, Liyan is a testament to how thoughtful design and cultural heritage can elevate everyday items into something truly meaningful.

Liyan was born from Corey’s passion for drone photography and Simone’s vision to incorporate Indigenous designs into accessible, high-quality products. Corey initially explored how his stunning aerial images could be transformed into practical items, like beach towels. For Simone, however, this venture was an opportunity to bring her Indigenous designs to a broader audience.
“I’ve always wanted to have my designs on products,” Simone shares, “and that’s where the idea to start Liyan really took off.”
What began as a shared aspiration soon blossomed into a thriving small business, and in just ten months, Liyan has earned a significant following, with products now available at Perth Airport—an incredible milestone for a relatively new brand.

Creating Liyan’s Unique Products
Every Liyan towel is a carefully crafted blend of aesthetics and environmental consciousness. Working from their home office, Simone takes the lead in creating digital designs that capture the essence of her Indigenous heritage. Each piece is crafted to reflect her cultural background and the stories woven into the land.
Once a design concept is ready, it’s sent to their supplier, who creates a digital mock-up of the product. The Atkinsons’ commitment to quality is unwavering; they meticulously review each sample to ensure it captures the spirit and functionality they envision. Once satisfied with the result, they place a bulk order, ensuring every towel meets their standards for beauty, comfort, and durability.

Sustainability at the Heart of Liyan
Sustainability is more than a buzzword for Liyan; it’s central to their brand mission. The towels are made from microfibre suede, incorporating up to 20 recycled plastic bottles per towel. This innovative approach reduces waste and produces towels that are lightweight, quick-drying, and durable—a perfect match for beach and gym use.
Liyan’s commitment to eco-friendly materials resonates with their larger mission to promote environmental stewardship through everyday products. By choosing Liyan, customers support a sustainable lifestyle while embracing the cultural narratives embedded in each design.

Balancing Life, Work, and a Growing Business

Managing a business alongside full-time and part-time jobs, all while raising a young child, is no easy feat. For Corey and Simone, time management has been one of their greatest challenges.
“Balancing day jobs, getting our business up and running, and also family time is a constant juggling act,” Corey explains.
Despite the hurdles, they find immense joy and fulfilment in growing Liyan and connecting with a supportive community of customers and fellow small business owners.
This passion is evident in their dedication to bringing Indigenous designs and eco-friendly products to life, and it fuels their desire to continue expanding Liyan. Their experience serves as a reminder that with resilience and a clear vision, it’s possible to make a dream a reality.
A Vision for the Future
As Liyan grows, Simone and Corey have ambitious goals. They aim to expand their product range to include items that align with their brand ethos of health, well-being, and sustainability. Additionally, they hope to create a platform to showcase other Indigenous artists, amplifying First Nations culture and providing a sustainable, culturally rich alternative to mainstream products.
Their vision for Liyan is not only to build a business but to inspire pride in Aboriginal culture through accessible, well-made products. Simone and Corey are committed to finding ways to give back to the community, hoping that Liyan can become a platform for positive cultural exchange.
