Discover the Ocean’s Beauty with SeaLife Differently

Sustainable, Stunning Towels that Give Back to Nature

As Christmas approaches, it’s the perfect time to consider gifting with purpose. At Perth Upmarket on November 17, 2024, SeaLife Differently, the eco-conscious brand founded by Prue Wheeler, will be showcasing an extraordinary collection of beach towels that combine her passion for marine life, photography, and sustainability. Not only are these towels practical, beautiful, and made from 100% recycled materials, but they also carry a piece of the ocean’s soul—a gift to remind us of the importance of preserving our planet.

Photography to Sustainable Products

Prue Wheeler’s journey to founding SeaLife Differently began on the Ningaloo Reef, where she worked as a freelance photographer for over 15 years. Capturing the underwater beauty of whale sharks, manta rays, turtles, and humpback whales, Prue developed a deep connection to the ocean and a desire to share its magic with the world. Her photography, once sold as prints, evolved into a more practical and innovative idea—unique beach towels that feature vibrant images of marine megafauna.

“I wanted a way to make my photography accessible, practical, and impactful,” Prue explains. “Beach towels felt like the perfect medium—lightweight, quick-drying, sand-resistant, and travel-friendly, while still capturing the beauty of the ocean.”

Thus, SeaLife Differently was born. Each towel serves as a functional piece of art, allowing people to carry a piece of the ocean wherever they go. With a love for travel, Prue designed the towels to be compact, making them ideal for any adventure, and every towel is crafted with sustainability at its core.

Crafting Towels with Purpose: Made from Recycled Materials

SeaLife Differently is committed to reducing plastic waste. Each towel is made from a unique suede microfiber blend that includes 85% recycled plastic bottles, with the remaining 15% sourced from repurposed materials like clothing offcuts and old fishing nets. The process starts with plastic bottles being shredded, melted, and spun into yarn, which is then blended with polyamide. This sustainable production method not only repurposes waste but also creates a durable, lightweight, and fast-drying towel that’s perfect for any outdoor adventure.

The towels are printed using a sublimation process, ensuring high-quality, long-lasting images of Prue’s original photography. Every element of SeaLife Differently’s production is designed to minimise environmental impact and offer customers a guilt-free, eco-friendly product that’s as beautiful as it is functional.

Creating Connections: A Memorable Success Story

One of Prue’s most cherished aspects of running SeaLife Differently is the connection it fosters with customers. “People often stop by my stall because a towel image sparks a memory—maybe it’s an animal they’ve swum with or a place they’ve visited,” she says. “Hearing customers share their stories and seeing the joy these images bring to them is incredibly rewarding.”

Prue’s towels are more than just beach accessories—they’re conversation starters. Customers frequently share photos of her towels being used worldwide, which serves as a testament to their quality, durability, and universal appeal. The overwhelming positive feedback and repeat customers affirm Prue’s mission: to share the ocean’s beauty in a way that’s both meaningful and practical.

Overcoming Challenges as a Small Business Owner

Like many small business owners, Prue has faced her fair share of challenges. Balancing the day-to-day operations with long-term growth has required her to wear multiple hats—from product design and marketing to customer service and accounting. “It’s a constant juggling act, but it’s incredibly fulfilling,” she admits. “I’m deeply invested in every aspect of the business, and that personal involvement makes each success even more meaningful.”

Working on SeaLife Differently full-time allows Prue the flexibility to balance her business and family life, especially with two young children. Her commitment to sustainability and passion for the ocean fuel her drive to grow the business while staying true to her values.

Looking Ahead: Goals for the Future

As SeaLife Differently continues to grow, Prue’s vision remains focused on expanding her product line and reaching more customers, both locally and online. She aims to launch more eco-friendly initiatives within the business, explore retail partnerships, and ultimately give back to marine conservation efforts. On a personal level, Prue hopes to achieve a better work-life balance, allowing her to return to the field and capture new images that inspire others to appreciate and protect the ocean.

“I want SeaLife Differently to continue evolving without compromising on sustainability,” Prue shares. “Expanding our range while keeping our environmental impact low is my goal, and I hope to give back to the marine world that inspired this journey.”
